About the company

Already in 1890 the inhabitants of Ljubljana were able to pour a glass of water from the newly constructed first kilometres of Ljubljana’s central water supply system.

The first canal in Ljubljana, which is still in use, was constructed in 1882. In 1899, Prof. Hrasky devised a plan for the regulation of the municipal sewage system in Ljubljana, including a water treatment plant. Two principal canals were designed for the drainage of waste water along the Ljubljanica River which are still in place today.

Before the war, the waste water treatment plant was designed, first in Kodeljevo, then in Fužine, while the current location of the central waste water treatment plant is in Zalog, near the confluence of the Sava and the Ljubljanica.

The older citizens will surely remember the municipal water supply company Mestni vodovod and the sewage company Kanalizacija which were merged into one company in the beginning of the 1980s.

Today, the company Vodovod - Kanalizacija provides healthy drinking water for the inhabitants of Ljubljana and takes care of the drainage and treatment of waste and meteoric water. Its long-term vision is achieved through development projects in both areas of operation and with the protection ov the environment and water sources.
